Concrete is becoming more used as a decorative finish because
of the durability and strength that concrete has. It also
is a green material used now to make counter tops that can
be acid stained to resembles polished stone such as marble
with a variegate look, with less cost for materials. Staining
concrete floors is an especially creative way to benefit from
the durability and decorative possibilities of this material.
Concrete staining is perfect for concrete floors and counter
tops, A concrete acid stain is achieved not by using dyes
or pigment based coloring systems, but a chemical reaction.
Water is mixed with salts and acid is then applied to the
concrete surface that will react to that specific concrete
and later at the right time, neutralized by a basic solution
of ammonia and water. A chemical reaction occurs with the
existing minerals ( mainly lime) in your concrete, creating
new colors on the concrete surface. Because of inconsistencies
in the surface of concrete, this process creates an attractive,
variegated appearance.
The resulting color has a thickness of about 1/16 to 1/32
of an inch. This type of staining is also considered a Green
process and after polishing, the surface will achieve a Marble
like appearance.
